90pc lung cancer due to smoking

Tawau: Former Vice-President of Tawau Hospice Association Gayline Ong strongly urged smokers to quit and non-smokers to refrain from picking up the habit in order to prevent lung cancer.Gayline said lung cancer is the main cause of cancer deaths in Malaysia. Ninety-five per cent of lung cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis."About 90 per cent of lung cancer is due to cigarette smoking and the occurrence of lung cancer is also high among non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke (passive smoking)," she said.ADVERTISEMENT According to her, tobacco smoke contains some 4,000 different chemicals. Environmental tobacco smoking (passive smoking) also contributes to lung cancer in non-smokers. The most common signs of lung cancer might be persistent cough, shortness of breath, blood-stained sputum, loss of weigh, chest pain and hoarseness of voice.Tawau Hospice Association in collaboration with Sabah Family Planning Association Tawau held a Second Cancer Awareness Campaign at the entrance of Giant Hypermarket here, recently.The campaign was carried out with the aim of early detection, treatment and saving lives. There was also free blood pressure check for the public.Silicone breast models enabled females to learn the proper way of touching in early detection of breast cancer. Besides, females were encouraged to purchase RM10 discount voucher for a Pap Smear Test and Breast Examination at Sabah Family Planning Tawau which was worth RM33 while the balance will be sponsored by the Hospice Association of Tawau.
