Former first deputy commissioner of NYPD dies at 68

John Timoney, who was once among the top brass at the NYPD, has died of lung cancer. He was 68.

Timoney was a member of New York’s police department between 1967 and 1996 and rose to the ranks of chief of department and first deputy commissioner — the agency’s No. 2 spot.

Timoney was previously commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department and of the Miami police force, which he left in 2010 amid upheaval.

His nephew, Brendan Timoney, serves the NYPD as commanding officer of the 13th Precinct. He’s a deputy inspector.

John Timoney also worked as police consultant for the Ministry of the Interior of Bahrain.

The Miami Herald reported that Timoney spent several years doing consulting work — much of it in the Middle East — before returning to Miami for treatment.

Former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said Timoney’s health had seemed to improve recently. He said hiring Timoney as police chief was “the best decision” he ever made.
