Raleigh International Bermuda’s scholarship students are to take a trip of a lifetime this summer to South Africa and Costa Rica.

The charity selected four Bermudians who will act as ambassadors during the ten-week trip. The 2024 Venturers Scholarship is valued at $12,000 each.

A spokeswoman for Raleigh said: “Amid the breathtaking landscapes of Costa Rican jungles and the rugged plateaus of South Africa, these young adventurers will use their survival skills, acquired through five months of rigorous training at Raleigh’s local training camps in Bermuda.”

The four recipients are Mikhyla Ming, Paris Robinson, Odhari Hodson and Adonté Martin.

They will spend the summer working across South Africa and Costa Rica, collaborating with indigenous communities, supporting orphanages and spearheading vital infrastructure projects, such as schools and water systems.

They will also trek through jungles and mountains for several weeks and their endeavours will encompass environmental initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability and conservation efforts.

Dany de Rodriguez, Raleigh’s executive director, said: “Raleigh International Bermuda extends our gratitude to our community partners for their invaluable contributions to the training camps.”

Ms de Rodriguez thanked all who have supported the scholarship including the Department of Parks; the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences; Wedco; the Royal Bermuda Regiment; the Bermuda Coastguard and St John Ambulance; as well as individual supporters.

She added: “Additionally, we extend our thanks to our alumni leaders, whose guidance and support were instrumental during the training camp. Special recognition goes to Keri Pacheco, Milvin DeRosa, Tajshana Tucker and Cole Durham for their exemplary leadership and commitment to empowering the next generation of adventurers.”

The students have all undergone Raleigh’s training camps, which equip young people with advanced survival skills in hunting, foraging, fire-building, shelter construction and resource management.

They also endure six consecutive days of trekking, sleeping in the outdoors, carrying up to 85lbs through all weather, as well as braving the ocean currents while swimming from Coney Island to Ferry Reach.

The scholarship recipients will be fundraising for their overseas expedition. To support them and contribute to their travel expenses, e-mail info@raleigh.bm or call 333-5678.
