HARNETT COUNTY — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced its plans to support a North Carolina Gold Star family rebuild after a fire destroyed their home.
On April 23, the Scherr family’s Harnett County home burned to the ground. While Charlotte Scherr and her two boys were not home when the fire broke out, the family lost five pets and all their belongings in the blaze.
This comes as the family is still dealing with the loss of Charlotte’s husband, Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Spadell, who passed away in 2021 after a courageous two-and-a-half-year battle with lung cancer.
Spadell served his country for over two decades completing overseas tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His cancer diagnosis was connected to exposure to burn pits during his overseas deployments.
Tunnel to Towers Foundation will pay off the family’s existing mortgage and provide a project manager to oversee the construction of a new home.
Charlotte was overcome when Tunnel to Towers Chairman & CEO Frank Siller called to deliver the news, “A wave of relief came over me and diminished the pain of our tragedy, even if for just a moment, and filled me with hope. The gravity of such a generous act cannot be put into words. Dave’s legacy and memory will live on even though the physical reminders of the life we had have been reduced to ash.”
Charlotte thanked the Foundation and all its supporters, adding, “My boys and I can focus on our forward momentum, and give back to the community many times over.”
The Tunnel to Towers Gold Star Family Home Program honors the legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country by paying off the mortgage or providing the surviving spouses and young children with mortgage-free homes.
“For more than 20 years David Spadell stepped up to serve his country, putting himself in harm’s way to keep this country safe. Tunnel to Towers is honored to step up and help protect the family the way he watched out for us,” said Tunnel to Towers Chairman & CEO Frank Siller.
