MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, CANADA, May 12, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- When John Alonso, Director of the Music Program at Newton’s Grove School, suffered a heart attack just two days before the school’s annual music showcase, the community was shaken. Scheduled for triple-bypass surgery, Mr. Alonso’s absence left a void—but also an opportunity to demonstrate the strength, dedication, and unity he spent more than 35 years nurturing in his students.

In a heartfelt tribute, students and staff at Newton’s Grove have come together to reimagine the performance in honour of their beloved teacher. The new date for the showcase, titled “Sòlas Ané”—a Gaelic phrase meaning “light and peace”—is Thursday, May 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Islington Evangel Centre, 49 Queen’s Plate Drive, Toronto.

Even from his hospital bed, Mr. Alonso reminded the school community that “the show must go on.” That spirit of perseverance and passion is now the foundation of this moving tribute.

Students will not only perform, but also will introduce the performers and their pieces. The concert will feature alumni and guest music educators conducting the bands, showcasing the deep musical legacy Mr. Alonso built.

“For over 35 years, John Alonso has inspired his students to express themselves through music, and he always reminds us of the power of music to connect us to each other,” said Gabrielle Bush, School Director. “The passion, creativity, and leadership that John has instilled in all of his students is being demonstrated in tribute to his dedication.”

This tribute concert is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of a man who built a community through music and a reflection of the values he instilled in generations of students. All are welcome to attend.
